BRDC F4 News: Fielding holds off Russell at Donington Park to intensify title battle

BRDC F4 LogoSennan Fielding secured his fourth BRDC F4 victory of the season in race one at Donington Park today (Saturday), to further intensify the championship battle.

From pole position, secured in this morning’s qualifying session, the HHC Motorsport driver led from start to finish, but had to keep a watchful eye in his mirrors with championship leader George Russell within striking distance throughout the 12 lap encounter.

Fielding claimed the win by just 0.828s, adding to his Silverstone treble secured last month, and moving him up to third in the championship race, with Russell’s second place enough to extend his championship advantage to 17 points over Arjun Maini. Struan Moore claimed his sixth podium in eight races with third place.

Maini was fourth ahead of Will Palmer, who climbed from ninth on the grid to take fifth, ahead of Diego Menchaca. Championship contender Raoul Hyman ran as high as fourth early on, but was forced to settle for seventh ahead of Douglas Motorsport’s Charlie Eastwood, who claims pole position for race two, which starts at 11.20am tomorrow (Sunday). Jordan Albert and Gaetano di Mauro completed the top-10.

Fielding made a good start off the line to lead into Redgate on lap one, while the Lanan Racing trio of Russell, Struan Moore and Arjun Maini squabbled for position. Moore briefly moved into second, but Russell fought back at the Old Hairpin, and then set off in pursuit of Fielding, who had built a gap of 1.3 seconds at the end of lap one.
Russell gradually pegged him back, with the pair separated by 0.8s mid way through the race. Fielding eked the gap back out to over a second before Russell closed him down again at the flag.

Fielding climbs above team mate Raoul Hyman into third place in the championship standings. Having been 29 points behind Russell at the start of the weekend, Fielding is now only 23 points behind, with 27 points now covering the top four with five races remaining, including the two tomorrow.

Fielding commented: “It was a very close race and George was pressuring me all the way through. The gap seemed to be stuck at around a second for the last half, I had a good initial advantage and then he put in some good laps and brought the gap down.

“I thought he was going to pressure me a lot more towards the end of the race but I was able to keep my cool and take a great result.

“I didn’t have to go defensive through the race, but every time I glanced in the mirror I could see the Lanan car right behind me, and I knew I had to push all the way through.”

Fielding, Russell and Moore were presented with their trophies on the podium by BRDC member and GT racer Shaun Balfe.
