F1 News: Barcelona T2 Day 3 – Pirelli

Barcelona, February 28, 2015 – The third day of testing at Barcelona concluded with Lewis Hamilton setting a fastest time of 1m23.022s on the P Zero Yellow soft tyre, but this was still not as quick as the best time seen so far in Barcelona this year: 1m22.792 from Nico Rosberg yesterday, also on the soft.

Conditions were cool and dry throughout the day, warming up to a peak of 17 degrees ambient and 30 degrees on track throughout the afternoon: the highest track temperature seen yet. There were only two red flag stoppages, both within the last 30 minutes of the session. This enabled the biggest total distance seen so far to be completed, with all but two of the cars driving for more than 100 laps today.

The teams had all the 2015 Pirelli compounds at their disposal, as well as the prototype medium: an experimental tyre that is being evaluated.

In the afternoon, most drivers carried out race simulations: long runs that tested tyre behaviour on varying loads of fuel, using more than one compound.

The best times today and their tyre choices:
Hamilton (Mercedes) 76 laps 1m23.022s Soft
Massa (Williams) 102 laps 1m23.262s Supersoft
Raikkonen (Ferrari) 141 laps 1m23.276s Supersoft
Sainz (Toro Rosso) 132 laps 1m24.191s Supersoft
Grosjean (Lotus) 116 laps 1m24.200s Supersoft
Ericsson (Sauber) 122 laps 1m24.477s Supersoft
Hulkenberg (Force India) 157 laps 1m24.939s Supersoft
Magnussen (McLaren) 39 laps 1m25.225s Soft
Ricciardo (Red Bull) 128 laps 1m25.742s Medium
